My story Pottery art clay design by Polona Zajc started with the idea of becoming a professional potter. I learnt my first techniques on the pottery spindle from a traditional potter while attending the School of Design and Photography. I started my professional career at Dekor in Ljubljana, where I worked as a ceramic painter. Later I got a job in nearby Komenda, a place with a strong pottery tradition. I learnt how to make ceramics, from shaping from a lump of clay, drying, firing, glazing to the finished product. In 1995 I founded my own company and since then I have been creating in my workshop at home in Mengeš.
Clay pottery art
The selection of pottery art clay products includes four categories. These are unique ceramic pottery, unique stoneware pottery, labyrinths and clay art. Within these four categories there is a multitude of different products. These are unique pottery for the kitchen, unique pottery for the home, decorative and kitchen stoneware, labyrinth symbols depicted on clay products and clay art. A special offer in my workshop are made-to-order products. These are various products created by agreement with the client. Behind these products there are stories, which I depict with shapes and colours in clay.
Colours and fire in the Pottery Art Workshop
Paint and fire in the pottery art workshop are the final process of making ceramics. The ceramics made in the pottery art workshop are vibrant colours. I paint exclusively by hand with brushes, spray larger areas with a spray can and sometimes glaze the pieces. The paintings are done with coloured glazes with a glossy or matt finish. For containers intended to come into contact with food, I only use glazes that are certified for this purpose. The final look of the ceramics and stoneware that comes out of the Pottery Art workshop is in the hands of fire. It is the firing of the clay that every piece has to go through. Ceramics, which is what fired clay is by definition, inspires me precisely because of the unpredictability of the outcome of the finished product, but also because of the myriad design possibilities.
Clay shaping in the Pottery Art Workshop
Clay shaping in the Pottery Art Workshop involves several techniques. The basic process of working in a pottery workshop is to turn the clay on a pottery spindle. Casting liquid clay into plaster moulds has emerged as a necessity in clay recycling. This is because the spinning process melts much of the clay with water, producing a liquid clay suitable for casting into moulds. I make my own models from plaster based on my own ideas. For the need to make the ceramic mosaics that are part of the range on these pages, the technique of rolling and cutting the clay came into being. The shapes of the tiles are then adapted to the substrate on which the mosaic is to be placed. The stamping of clay into plaster moulds has been used for the production of protocol products, bespoke corporate gifts with company logos and souvenirs. All these products have a story behind them, which is depicted in the clay impressions. And of course there is clay sculpting, where clay artworks are created.
