Clay spheres

Clay spheres

Clay spheres are shapes that are used in quite a few products in the Pottery Art workshop. They are made using plaster models, which are also made in the workshop. Liquid clay is poured into the plaster moulds. The plaster draws the water to itself and the clay collects on the walls of the model. When the layer of clay on the wall is thick enough, the clay is poured out of the mould. The clay hemispherical shape dries and shrinks. After some time, it can be removed from the model without damaging it. Such hemispheres are then used to make various spherical clay products. With further moulding, of course.

Ceramic products in the shape of a sphere

Ceramic products in the shape of a sphere are interesting. It is a real challenge to play with these shapes. You make a hemisphere or several hemispheres out of clay and start assembling. Of course, these hemispheres come in different sizes. Sometimes you need to add something, maybe a base to make it more stable or a handle for the cup. And sometimes, when the clay is still soft, you just push the sphere on the base a little bit and it's stable. Often we punch the surface to get a beautiful pattern of holes. This is compulsory if you are making lamps. Light shines through the holes and makes patterns on the wall. Once the design is finished, the product dries and burns. Once fired, we apply glazes in different techniques. After a second firing, the product is finished. Sometimes, however, gold is also applied to some products, which are fired in the third firing. These are particularly precious products.
