Saturn’s Labyrinth on a Plate
Saturn’s Labyrinth on a Plate is part of a series of labyrinths engraved on ceramic plates. The ceramic works by Pottery Art—Polona Zajc’s clay designs—also feature depictions of labyrinths of all kinds. This particular labyrinth is Saturn’s Labyrinth, or the Labyrinth of Life and Death, in its natural, receptive form. The plate is handcrafted on a potter’s wheel from gray clay. The symbol of the Labyrinth of Life and Death is engraved on it. It was fired at a temperature of 1210°C. The clay plate features various engraved patterns painted with colored glazes, while the labyrinth is glazed with a flowing blue-gray glaze. The details are accented with real gold. The plate has a diameter of 31 cm. The labyrinth design gives the piece special significance, both for the person who owns it and for the environment in which it is placed.
Pottery art clay design by Polona Zajc
Polona Zajc’s pottery art collection features clay plates. Each clay plate represents its own labyrinth design. These are sources of power that are very much active. Having power does not mean having access to a large amount of energy, but also having access to a great deal of intelligence. And this is how labyrinths work. They are usually built on the ground so that one can walk along their paths. On these pages, however, you’ll find labyrinths depicted in ceramics. We can also “walk” through these as we follow their paths, drawn or carved into the clay.
Labyrinth of life and death
The Labyrinth of Life and Death is also known as Saturn’s Labyrinth. Life and death are themes that encompass everything represented by all the previous labyrinths. It is significant because, through its symbolism, it presents death as a process rather than an end. Thus, death becomes a part of life rather than its end. Its element is earth, its color is black or dark blue, its direction is west, and its natural form is receptive. Pottery art also features pieces depicting the Labyrinth of Life and Death. Since this labyrinth is the most complex—encompassing the themes of all previous labyrinths—the pieces that bear its form also become special and significant. By using these pieces, we remain in constant contact with the workings of Saturn’s labyrinth.
