Pottery art clay design by Polona Zajc
Clay souvenirs are part of the Pottery Art Clay Design products by Polona Zajc. With their images and characters depicted on them, they recall stories and images from the past from different parts of Slovenia. They are made by hand from several types of clay, in various design techniques. The mementos can be turned on a potter's spindle, as impressions of images in clay or as vessels cast in plaster moulds and the like. Their story is also emphasised and accompanied by a rich palette of coloured glazes.
Veronica's pendant
The Veronica Pendant depicts the myth of Veronica of Kamnik. The myth says that Count Veronica lived above Kamnik. She refused the request of the priests to donate money for the church. She cursed herself and decided to turn into a snake. The curse was fulfilled. Veronica, half woman, half snake, is still lying at the foot of the Little Castle above Kamnik, waiting for a saviour.
The figure of Veronika, half woman, half snake, is embossed on a handmade stoneware pendant. The body surrounded by hair and a snake's tail. All this is rounded off by a coronet on the top of the pendant, which suggests that Veronica was a countess. The details are accentuated by the iridescent glaze, which spills over into every detail of the relief. The pendants are made in different shades of colour. They are worn on a black cord fastened with a clasp. Each of Veronika's pendants is thus a unique, special souvenir, a beautiful piece of jewellery which at the same time evokes the legend of Kamnik.
